Mangroves: Meet the UAE’s Carbon Guardian
This project, funded by the National Geographic Society, highlights the UAE’s active approach to combating climate change with nature-based solutions, positioning the country as a leader in global environmental preservation, especially in mangrove restoration. It showcases the UAE’s progress in planting mangroves and highlights their ecological significance. It also explores the use of technology for extensive plantation efforts and showcases the diverse ecosystem supported by grey mangroves.
Globally, mangroves are at risk of degradation due to anthropogenic actions and climate change, among other threats. Facing challenges like increasing sea levels, extreme weather conditions, and urban expansion, the UAE remains steadfast in its commitment to counteracting these adversities.
The country’s ambitious goal to plant millions of mangroves by 2030 demonstrates its dedication to enhancing biodiversity and environmental care. These efforts are pivotal for carbon sequestration, climate regulation, and providing crucial habitats for many marine species and resilience against environmental disasters. The extensive mangrove planting campaign aims to enhance air quality, act as a significant carbon sink, and support the resurgence of diverse wildlife populations.
The project emphasizes the environmental impact of mangroves in the UAE and their crucial role in supporting biodiversity and ensuring economic sustainability.

In collaboration with Nikon, with camera support generously provided by Nikon, I highlighted the importance of mangroves and why their conservation is crucial. Community members explored the camera, and parents and children came together to learn about mangroves. Heartfelt thanks to Jubail Mangrove Park and to Akhila Kumaran for organizing this beautiful experience with her friends and family. Taken at Jubail Mangroves, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Akhila Kumaran, an enthusiastic environmental advocate, invited her friends and family to Al Reem Mangroves, Abu Dhabi, UAE, to learn about cameras and the art of photography, while also exploring the importance of mangrove ecosystems.
